Starting out

Starting in construction can be confusing. There are lots of different courses and often you don’t know where to start. At B.S.O.C, we offer courses for absolute beginners and those who want a professional career in construction.

Where do I start?

Think about the things that you might like to do. For example:

  • Bricklaying

  • Electrics

  • Carpentry

  • Plumbing

  • Renewable energy

  • General maintenance

Once you have decided the area that you are interested in, think about whether you might want a career in that field, or you just want to develop skills for your own personal use.

Next steps

For DIYERS

If you want to learn more about trade skills for home use, then have a look at our short course page. We run evening and weekend courses on tiling and plastering, bricklaying, plumbing and electrics, aimed at DIYERS and those wanting to refresh their skills. Our list of courses is constantly expanding. So, add your name to our mailing list to keep updated on new courses.

For Tradespeople

Once you feel a career in construction is right for you, then think about one of qualification courses. On our qualification page we list the courses specifically designed for tradespeople.

If you have no experience in construction, think about starting out with one of our level 1 courses. These courses are specially designed to provide you with the basic skills for your chosen field. On successful completion of your level 1 course, you can progress to level 2.

Not sure about your level?

It can be tricky to work out what level you are at if you don’t have a formal qualification. Our team of experienced tutors can help you to discover the correct level that you should be working at. We offer open days and taster sessions where you can obtain professional advice on what course is best for you and the career options available to you.
